The .43 caliber bore is rifled with seven grooves and lands, and the tapered octagon barrel measures 42" long. The bore is mostly bright with crisp rifling visible, but does have scattered pits throughout. A small copper blade front sight with iron base is dovetailed 3/4" behind the muzzle. The sight appears as a "grain of rice" and creates a very fine sight picture. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. The barrel exterior has developed a dark textured brown patina, with heavier pitting around the breech from corrosive cap spray. The long slender pointed tang of the breech plug has one bolt that passes through to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with a single iron pin.
This halfstock rifle has a classic late 19th century Eastern U.S. appearance with slender shaping, a deep crescent buttplate, and triggerguard with a finger spur and scroll grip rail. The rifle is stocked in walnut trimmed in brass furniture with a pewter forend cap, which also serves as the ramrod entry pipe. The walnut stock has a well used appearance with many handling marks, but has no chips, cracks, or repairs. A long brass toeplate is secured with small nails to protect this delicate area of the stock from damage. The ramrod passes through two pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib. The ramrod is a replacement and is not fitted with any tips. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this rifle. We note the ramrod extends 1" past the muzzle. The buttstock does not have a cheek piece. The square bottom brass sideplate is inlet flush with the wood and a single bolt passes through to engage the lock.
The percussion lock is decorated with die embosses scrolls and is stamped LEMAN LANCASTER. The lock has developed the same textured brown patina as the barrel. The drum is fitted with a brass flash cup to help protect the stock from cap spray. The tumbler has only a single position, so this lock is either in the fired, or cocked position. The stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is a modern replacement. The single lever double set triggers will only fire from the set position. You may set the triggers before of after cocking the lock, but the triggers will only fire from the set position.
